In a furious reaction to his failure to start WW3 by shelling Poland Zelensky ordered the reckless shelling of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant which is under Russian control. It was repeatedly hammered by Ukrainian shelling on Saturday and Sunday November 20th. This reckless action drew condemnation from the head of the UN nuclear watchdog who without naming the perpetrators who said such attacks risk a major nuclear disaster. The discredited Western Media in true fashion fail to stop lying and firmly blame Russia without a shred of evidence as they did by blaming Russia for the Ukrainian shelling of Poland.
Repeated Reckless Shelling
The repeated shelling of the nuclear power plant has raised international concern about the potential for a devastating fallout incident only 500km from the site of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. More than a dozen blasts from American and western provided Ukrainian fired shells shook the Zaporizhzhia plant on late on Saturday and Sunday. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) failed to name the obvious and easily identifiable source of the shelling. The IAEA team on the site said there had been damage to the plants buildings, systems and equipment which houses Europe’s largest nuclear power station. The IAEA team could see explosions from their windows.
Empty Weasel Words
“The news from our team yesterday and this morning is extremely disturbing,” UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi said in a statement without naming or condemning the perpetrators. “Explosions occurred at the site of this major nuclear power plant, which is completely unacceptable. Whoever is behind this, it must stop immediately. As I have said many times before, you’re playing with fire!”
Safety Precautions
The reactors are at present shut down due to the risk of nuclear fuel overheating if the repeated attacks cut the power that drives the cooling systems. The repeated and recklessly indiscriminate shelling has cut power lines. Russia’s defence ministry has said that Ukraine fired shells at power lines supplying the plant. Quoting an official from Russian nuclear power operator Rosenergoatom the Russian news agency TASS reported that some of the plants storage facilities had been hit, “They shelled not only yesterday, but also today, they are shelling right now,” Renat Karchaa, an adviser to Rosenergoatom’s CEO said, warning that any artillery attack at the site posed a threat to nuclear safety. Karchaa went on to say that the shells had been fired near a dry nuclear waste storage facility and a building that houses fresh spent nuclear fuel. No radioactive emissions have been currently detected, according to TASS.
Silence from Kiev
Ukrainian officials failed to immediately respond to requests for comment. Kyiv and Moscow have accused each other of attacking the plant and risking a nuclear accident but the Ukrainians have proven to be the source of the shelling in the past and it appears like nothing has changed.
A European Wide Disaster
This beleaguered nuclear power plant provided about a fifth of Ukraine’s electricity before Russia’s February 24th invasion. As a result of shelling by Ukrainian forces the plant has been forced to operate on backup generators on a number of occasions. When is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) going to stop being partisan and start doing their job to prevent a devastating European wide disaster?
